Went to go look at a Genesis and found myself in the deal room. The car had and internet price and a sticker price. I asked for something lower than the internet price out the door. The sales team added 3k to the sticker price, mostly for "Aftermarket" or something, and wouldn't budge even a little after I went higher to meet them. I ended up walking out and pretty angry.
At this pace, I'll never end up buying a car...

A friend of mine made 6-8 trips to 3 different dealerships to buy a new Focus. He finally wound up with a really great deal. Don't give up.

If they let you walk then whatever you offered wasn't enough

Imagine having to deal with the dealer AND the manufacturer. I'm trying to do a buy-back or a GM Trade Assistance on my shitbox Spark. Its like a root canal and a vasectomy all at once with no anesthesia.

What is the deal with American dealerships ADDING to the recommended retail price or 'sticker price'.
Here we have OTR (recommended on the road) price where the price you see is the one you pay, if you can negotiate a better deal all well and good.
A= number of additional options over the spec of the vehicle chosen.
B= the accumulated cost of those options (A) together.
C= the 'on the road price' of the vehicle selected and all the options (A), including road fund licence, initial charge of registering the vehicle with the DVLA and VED (essentially road tax) (Vehicle Excise Duty, yearly fee based on the CO2 emissions of the vehicle ordered) and delivery charge and TAX.
Ocassionally someone might try and ask over and above on a premium vehicle but you simply walk out and tell the other dealership your bad experience and they do their best to better that experience as many know you'll talk to friends and family of your bad experience and then ask why you still bought a car of which you then tell of your good experience and roll on from there.

Try again in a week. My wife and I walked out on a used CRV when the dealership wouldn't budge. They called us nonstop a week later asking us to come back and work out a deal. They ended up dropping their online price for less than what we had offered. (We ended up buying new for only $1200 more.)

Some are stealerships. Where I bought my car the negotiations took 3 minutes. 500 over invoice and sold.

Not always true. It's not that it wasn't enough; but rather they think that given the circumstances, they could get more out of you/someone else. It's happened to me before, that I walked out on a potential deal only to get a phone call or email some time later agreeing to or beating the very deal that was a sticking point. Some times the dealer just thinks you're more motivated to buy than he is to sell.
